Making Your Own Inner Wisdom Cards

Making Your Own Inner Wisdom Cards

"What if you knew that the impulse to move in a way that creates beauty in the world will arise from deep within and guide you every time you simply pay attention and wait? How would this shape your stillness, your movement your willingness to follow the impulse to just let go and dance?" ~Oriah Mountain Dreamer

Making Your Own Inner Wisdom Cards, Quote Oriah Mountain Dreamer Have you ever made your own Inner Journey Wisdom Cards? Would you like to make some of your own. This is a very creative, magical and deeply healing process.

Although sometimes you start out with a card in mind, more often then not, the card evolves. The process is so engaging that you yield to the card that seems to be created by a force outside of you!

The process deepens as you ask the card for a message, as you will see by clicking on some of the cards below. Sometimes, the image on the card is so powerful, that you don't feel you need anything but the image.  If you are interested in making your own cards and would like to work one-on-one with me on this fascinating journey, email me or call 914-962-4432 for information.

Yes, we can do this on the telephone!

Who Am I Really? We Define Ourselves Through the Distorting Mirror

Who Am I Really? We Define Ourselves Through the Distorting Mirror

Who Am I Really? We Define Ourselves Through the Distorting Mirror

A great deal of what we think about our self, how we view our self in the world and whether we think we are "good" or "bad" people, sensitive or insensitive, successful or a failure, compassionate or selfish is defined by viewing our self from the outside looking in. This includes the self-defining stories that arise out of family and culture; they are the creation of ego, whose home base is fear.

When we define our self through these distorting mirrors... and they really are distortions...we see our self from the outside looking in.

Once you begin to ask the questions, the outer world, ego-view of self begins to take second place.
“Who am I? Who am I really? Who is the me beyond the mask, beyond the thought, beyond the roiling emotions, beyond family, beyond culture, gender, race and religion,? Ask questions such as these and the outer world, ego-view of self begins to take second place.

There isn't a person alive who doesn't view herself or himself through a distorting mirror, to a greater or lesser degree. The heart, the soul and spirit call us to turn from this distorting mirror, if necessary to smash it with the sword of the Spiritual Warrior, and walk into the embrace of the one you truly are.

Being a Spiritual Warrior: Thoughts for the New Year

Being a Spiritual Warrior: Thoughts for the New Year

Spiritual Warrior: Thoughts for New Year
Being A Spiritual Warrior
Some Thoughts for the New Year

In 2014, I find I am enough.
In 2014, I fall into confusion and forget.
Humanity is filled with bumps and warts.
Meanness and jealousy,
greed and hate come with the territory.
Imperfection is a given.
In 2014, I stumble and fall,
and forgive my humanness.
Laughing, I embrace the fall,
receive a gift,
a promise
an offering
to remember
there is more to me than I suspected.
In 2014, I embrace compassion
fierceness and strength,
joy and adventure.
This is who I truly am.
More than I ever dreamed.
Me, in all my glorious humanity
I am a spiritual warrior.
I break the distorting mirror
and remember who I truly Am.

How To Stop Failing Even When You Succeed

How To Stop Failing Even When You Succeed

Most of us see ourselves as the accumulation of stories defined by our role in the outer world.
These stories can be ones of success and hold moments of joy, feelings of being alive, worthy, respected and loved. Paradoxically, even when the outer world stories are positive, what we mistakenly believer are the deeper truths invariably seep in. We think to ourselves things such as:
1.   My success won't last long...  It really was a fluke.
2.   The goodness, ability, intelligence, etc. that people see in me will ultimately be revealed as false glitter.
3.   I am unworthy and if people knew the true me, they would see what a terrible person I really am – a fraud and imposter.

How To Stop Failing Even When You Succeed
Are you ready to take off your mask?

We put on a good face to overcompensate
We feel this to a greater or lesser extent, and there are ways that we “put on a good face” to over-compensate for our fears of being "found out." Inside, however, we fall victim again and again to the fraud and imposter syndrome that that convinces us we are terrible people, unworthy, shameful, stupid... whatever is your false version of self.

Most people never awaken to the fact that the self they secretly condemn is not the real Self. It is the small, ego self. Perhaps you are nodding as you read this, thinking, yes, yes, I know this about my ego. But there seems little I can do to affect change.

You can’t force self-change.
You can’t even understand it. You can only have the experience and feel the embrace of True Self.
  1. Your True Self never condemns or hides.
  2. Your True Self is filled with compassion, joy and unconditional love.
  3. Your True Self doesn’t categorize what happens in life as good or bad. All is part of the adventure, part of your path and another opportunity for growth.
  4. Your True Self never hides. It is your ego self that can spend a lifetime hiding from True Self.
The journey to True Self is not an easy one. It means defying a lifetime of false stories and ego lies.

Transform the Way You See Creativity and Yourself

Transform the Way You See Creativity and Yourself

Transform the Way You See Creativity and YourselfThe multifaceted journey of creativity is not limited to the arts.
Creativity is not an end in itself. Creativity is a path from which the journey of life is explored, the mystery embraced. The multifaceted journey of creativity is not limited to the arts. There is another level of creativity that beckons, awakening us to the deeper truth of who we are, or who we would be. This is the journey of soul, an ancient quest central to the great myths and integral to the creative process. Then creativity is synonymous with life itself and a powerful source for personal spiritual growth and healing.

Anorexic Creativity...

How to Deepen Creativity By Embracing Your Own Shadow

How to Deepen Creativity By Embracing Your Own Shadow

Embracing the Shadow: A Journey Toward Wholeness"One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious." ~ Carl Jung

Everyone has a shadow, much of which was created in childhood when our need for love and protection caused us to reject parts of us deemed shameful, unworthy or dangerous by family, teachers, religious leaders, friends and even our enemies. These disowned parts of us were exiled to the darkest depth of our unconscious, hidden from the world and often from ourselves.

This is a huge problem, for the shadow is a powerful part of us. We cannot will it away or think that it remains subdued just because we have forgotten its existence.

How to Find Clarity in Flowers and Weeds

How to Find Clarity in Flowers and Weeds

How to find clarity in natureI have been wandering lately in a fog, finding clarity only when I pulling weeds and walking aimlessly in my garden, lush and wild with spring. Every way I turn, I am lost in a mélange of purples, blues, shades of rose. I stand in awe. Hardly breathing. Just like last year and the year before and the year before and the years that have long since become only memory, I am captured anew by the beauty and perfection of all that is color and form in nature. A flower becomes sanctuary.

There is, too, the intense purpose and focus of pulling weeds. Then I think of nothing else. Cleaning a patch, pulling and pulling until the earth is, for the moment, deep and brown... spotless. My fingers dig in the cool loose soil. I think the flowers and the bushes breathe more freely.

Fear Is the Fire Breathing Paper Dragon

Fear Is the Fire Breathing Paper Dragon

Fear Is the Fire Breathing Paper Dragon
Change terrifies us. Fear grips us. I didn’t ask for this. Why am I always the victim of the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune?

When fear steps in...
Even when we are hungering for the change, fear steps in and makes the change seem impossible.

The truth is You, the True You, knows that there is nothing to fear. The True You came into life for the adventure of life and knows fear is part of the journey,
but doesn’t take it as fire breathing dragon appears to be.

The True You knows that illness, loss of a job or relationship, a betrayal, an illness and death are a clarion call to change! Yet fear is feels very real. It isn't. Fear is the fire breathing paper Dragon set off by the ego.

Change is the core of life. Terrified or not, change happens, all the time.

Deepening the Meaning of Erotic: Changing the Meaning of Reality

Deepening the Meaning of Erotic: Changing the Meaning of Reality, Quote Audrey Lorde

The Inner Journey demands the bravery of the Spiritual Warrior
The inner journey is not for the faint of heart and it demands the bravery of the spiritual warriors who, as the 14th century Persian mystic, Haifiz, said, “tame the beasts in their pasts so that the knights hoofs can no longer break the jeweled vision in the heart.”

Imagine if we saw our journey through life as
one that protected “the jeweled vision of the heart.”

The Erotic Embrace...

How to End Creativity Block

How to End Creativity Block

When seriousness is a drag...
I have to admit, I have a very, very serious side. All work, no fun... that sort of thing. And all too often, that side of me takes control of my life. It makes even my creative endeavors feel like chores. It makes my life a big drag.

I'm pretty tired of that part of me, and it's why I am exploring happiness. Exploring it with a new-found passion that has opened a unexpected entryways into enjoying life. I find I am feeling more creative and actually laughing more.

Are You Too Busy To Be Happy?

Are You Too Busy To Be Happy?

Are You Too Busy to Be Happy? Quote GeotheThen your creativity is suffering, too!
When does happiness appear on your to-do list?
Have you ever noticed how as soon as you wake up, you begin making choices. And the lists begin. Have to do this and this and this today....

Where in your list does your happiness and creativity appear?

Are the things that make you happy and feed your creativity the first to go?

Are you, the essential You, passed over in your daily list of what's important?

Do you sacrifice your life to being busy?

Sacrificing your Self to your busy "to do" list isn't a healthy choice. It drains you of happiness. Happy people have happiness to share!

List three things you can do every day to nurture your creativity and release the flow of happiness within you. They don't have to be time consuming. Small gifts count.

"One must ask children and birds how strawberries and cherries taste." ~ Goethe

Happiness Is Not A Commodity that Can Be Given or Stolen from You.

Happiness Is Not A Commodity that Can Be Given or Stolen from You.

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." ~Eleanor Roosevelt

Happiness Is Not A Commodity that Can Be Given or Stolen from You. I love this quote from Eleanor Roosevelt and, in fact, think of it often.  For our purposes, exploring happiness, we can paraphrase her this way: "No one can make you unhappy without your consent."  And "No one can make you happy without your consent."  Now pause a moment and ask your mind what it thinks about this observation. Don't censor the mind. Just let it have its say...

Happiness Is Always In the Present

Happiness Is Always In the Present

Happiness Is Always In the Present
When the mind-rage takes over
The other day I was in a meeting with my husband and son about a business we have been developing for a very long time. I was interested, listening, participating, and all of a sudden my mind took me to "fear." It shouted, "This is the same old, same old!" "This business will never open!"  "This so-called business is going to put us in the poor house."

Listening to my mind-raging fear scenario, I felt my anger rising at an exponential rate.. It was all I could do not to say something to my husband and son, something which would have been bitter and destructive. I didn't want to do that. And then I remembered "happiness."

Mother’s and Daughters… a Mother’s Passing

Mother’s and Daughters… a Mother’s Passing

Mothers and Daughters... A Mother's Passing
Me, My Mother and My Daughter, Natasha
I can't go, I told myself. I can't face this...
My mother died in early December. She was 91 years old, living in a nursing home and slipping rapidly into dementia. On a late Wednesday afternoon, she was taken to the hospital with an infection that had came on quite suddenly. The doctors felt that without intervention, which she had made clear she did not want, she would die. Still, when I got the call, my first inclination was, I can't go to the hospital. Not tonight. Long Island is too far away and I am exhausted. I was exhausted. It all brought up too much "stuff" around my mother and our very difficult relationship.

Changing my mind....
I told my sister, I would come in the morning. My sister accepted my decision, but I knew she needed me. I heard it in her voice. I called her back and said I was coming. My husband offered to drive me to the hospital, but I insisted it would be better for him to stay home with the dogs... so we didn't have to worry about them. And I knew this was a time for me, my sister and my mother...

The Shadow Land of the Human Psyche is Grist for the Artist's Mill: Don't Be Afraid to Use It

The Shadow Land of the Human Psyche is Grist for the Artist's Mill: Don't Be Afraid to Use It

I sent my Soul through the Invisible
Some Letter of that After-Life to spell
And by and by my Soul returned to me
And answer’d ‘I myself am Heav’n and Hell.’
                                                    —Omar Khayyam, Sufi poet
As the poem by Omar Khayyam suggests, our power as human beings comes from the blending of the light and dark, the gentle and powerful. Power can be used to create or destroy. Destruction can be seen as positive or negative. Darkness can be terrifying or magnificent.
Your deeper self knows that creating is a constant dance between heaven and hell, yin and yang, intuitive and rational, head and gut and heart, and in that dance there is no right and wrong, no like and dislike; there is simply being and dancing the passionate dance. It is this shadow world of the human psyche that becomes the grist for the artist’s mill...

The Enemy Within

The Enemy Within

The Enemy Within: When Captain Kirk Splits
If you are a Trekkie, you might remember the very early “Star Trek” episode (#5) entitled “The Enemy Within.” Although dated—it was aired on October 6, 1966 (Stardate 1672.1)—it is a perfect example of Picasso’s quote and the core work of this book. I quote from the video jacket:

A transporter malfunction causes Kirk to be split into separate beings: one compassionate, the other savage. Spock and McCoy suffer along with their friend as Kirk confronts a side of his nature no man should see. His only hope for survival is to reunite his two selves.

Kirk has to destroy his image of himself as a “good” man if he is to survive.
Kirk’s savage or what I would call primal self gets split off. This is the enemy or beast within. This is the side of us the Inner Critic doesn’t want to let out. This side of Kirk is lustful, greedy, murderous; he incarnates all the deadly sins. But without his primal self, the “compassionate” side of Kirk begins to wither on the vine. He loses his ability to make a decision much less be in command of the Enterprise and, because of his indecisiveness, some of his crew are threatened with death. The compassionate side of Kirk, the Captain in Kirk, cannot function without his primal self. And the primal self, while at first roaming the ship and leaving havoc in his wake, also begins to weaken and soon is close to death.

The Embrace of Wholeness
While Kirk would like to let this side of him die, Dr. Spock points out that he cannot. He needs this part of him if he is to survive. It is this part of him, tempered with compassion and intellect, that makes him a leader. In a very touching finale, the two sides of Kirk not only unite but embrace one another, and the compassionate side of Kirk accepts his darkside with love. Only then can the real Captain Kirk step forward and take control of the ship once more. In essence, Kirk has to destroy his image of himself as a “good” man if he is to survive. He has to let his crew see that he, like all humans, has this self seething with all the primal instincts, and more importantly, he has to embrace, to love his darkside.

Creativity is Active and Passionate!

Creativity is Active and Passionate
"You cannot be truly creative until the gypsy in you dances."  ~Clarissa Pinkola Estes
Imagining your creative desires is the first step on the journey to getting them. The pursuit is not an easy one. Creativity doesn’t just happen. Wildly creative people aren’t the beloved children of the Fates. creativity is hard work. It is risky business. Creativity is something we must choose every day of our lives.

Creativity is active and passionate.
Creativity is about doing and feeling. The rich fertile ground where creativity is born and nurtured lies in the heart and the gut. Creativity rises from the unknown, the unseen, the forgotten. Creativity laughs and cries, it dances and sings, it creates and destroys.
