How To Stop Failing Even When You Succeed

How To Stop Failing Even When You Succeed

Most of us see ourselves as the accumulation of stories defined by our role in the outer world.
These stories can be ones of success and hold moments of joy, feelings of being alive, worthy, respected and loved. Paradoxically, even when the outer world stories are positive, what we mistakenly believer are the deeper truths invariably seep in. We think to ourselves things such as:
1.   My success won't last long...  It really was a fluke.
2.   The goodness, ability, intelligence, etc. that people see in me will ultimately be revealed as false glitter.
3.   I am unworthy and if people knew the true me, they would see what a terrible person I really am – a fraud and imposter.

How To Stop Failing Even When You Succeed
Are you ready to take off your mask?

We put on a good face to overcompensate
We feel this to a greater or lesser extent, and there are ways that we “put on a good face” to over-compensate for our fears of being "found out." Inside, however, we fall victim again and again to the fraud and imposter syndrome that that convinces us we are terrible people, unworthy, shameful, stupid... whatever is your false version of self.

Most people never awaken to the fact that the self they secretly condemn is not the real Self. It is the small, ego self. Perhaps you are nodding as you read this, thinking, yes, yes, I know this about my ego. But there seems little I can do to affect change.

You can’t force self-change.
You can’t even understand it. You can only have the experience and feel the embrace of True Self.
  1. Your True Self never condemns or hides.
  2. Your True Self is filled with compassion, joy and unconditional love.
  3. Your True Self doesn’t categorize what happens in life as good or bad. All is part of the adventure, part of your path and another opportunity for growth.
  4. Your True Self never hides. It is your ego self that can spend a lifetime hiding from True Self.
The journey to True Self is not an easy one. It means defying a lifetime of false stories and ego lies.

How To Use Writing To Support Your Inner Journey

How To Use Writing To Support Your Inner Journey

How To Use Writing To Support Your Inner Journey

You don't need to be a novelist or even keep a journal to use writing to support your inner journey. There is something transformative and freeing about putting pen to paper and allowing your feelings to flow through the pen. Something magical happens.

Wisdom often shows up. Surprising creativity abounds. The key is to allow the flow to happen without your Inner Critic rising to the fore and questioning your ability — even your right to write!

How Does Writing Support Your Inner Journey?
Writing opens deep knowing. It releases unexpected wells. It offers you insight into a you who you may not even suspect existed.

Writing on the Spiritual Journey Can Be Used for Many Things:
  • Finding Your Life's Purpose
  • Memoir
  • Writing to Heal
  • Connecting to the voice of True Self
  • Prayer
  • Wisdom
  • Hearing your heart speak...

"Thank you, Emily, for the step into magic shadow world of the me who can write about things she does not know she knows and then be amazed at all she can learn from herself." ~Jen Simson

How to Deepen Creativity By Embracing Your Own Shadow

How to Deepen Creativity By Embracing Your Own Shadow

Embracing the Shadow: A Journey Toward Wholeness"One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious." ~ Carl Jung

Everyone has a shadow, much of which was created in childhood when our need for love and protection caused us to reject parts of us deemed shameful, unworthy or dangerous by family, teachers, religious leaders, friends and even our enemies. These disowned parts of us were exiled to the darkest depth of our unconscious, hidden from the world and often from ourselves.

This is a huge problem, for the shadow is a powerful part of us. We cannot will it away or think that it remains subdued just because we have forgotten its existence.

Creativity As the Path of the Spiritual Warrior

Creativity As the Path of the Spiritual Warrior

Creativity As the Path of the Spiritual WarriorOur creativity is most often used to birth our creations in the outer world, whether it be in the arts, the healing professions or any creative expression that is driven by our passion. Although these are powerful expressions, we are called to an even deeper level of creativity: the birth of true Self, who was there before you came into life and will remain when the body dies.

True Self is your center, your stillness and the knower of mystery and wisdom.
True Self loves your humanity and the immensity of who you are — an immensity beyond the mind's reckoning. True Self waits for you, always. Through her, you find your passion, your purpose and your freedom.

Creativity is the Spiritual Warrior's torch-giving light.
Deepen your understanding of how the Creative Process and its enduring cycles are the foundation of all of life's most challenges and adventures.

The Zen of Inner Vision and the Imagination

The Zen of Inner Vision and the Imagination

The Zen of Inner Inner Vision and the Imagination

Inner Vision, the Pathway for the Imagination
  • Inner vision has no fear of the unknown.
  • Inner vision pierces the veils of mystery and magic and embraces paradox.
  • Inner vision is innately the wandering pilgrim and fool who knows that getting lost is being found.
  •  Inner vision is guiding light into our soul.
Creative success cannot be determined by the outside world. If you focus on that "prize" you are very likely to miss the real success, which is internal and deeply personal. The question becomes how to turn your sights inward? How to trust the inner vision as pilgrim, fool and intrepid guide in the shadowy and chaotic inner landscape? This demands courage, a leap of faith, a giving up of control and surrender. The result: a joyful expansiveness and freedom!

Winter, Goethe and Death As Zen Master: A Quote

Winter, Goethe and Death As Zen Master: A Quote

Goethe As Zen Master or Death as Promise. Goethe Quote
As we go into the dark womb time of the earth, where dying is the promise of new life, I think of this by Goethe:

And so long as you haven’t experienced
This: to die and so to grow,
You are only a troubled guest
On the dark earth.

As I look my life from where I am right now,
this quote makes me feel.....

Letting Stillness Grow

Letting Stillness Grow

Letting Stillness Grow, A Poem
A few months ago I entered SIBYL Magazine's poetry contest and I am thrilled to share the results.
"Emily, although your written works did not place within the top four winning slots, the editorial judges absolutely fell in loved with the pure-light and healing energy your poetry emanated in the poem entitled: LETTING STILLNESS GROW.

Our judges were so impressed with this poem, they'd like to offer you an opportunity to share a single piece of your poetry inside each bimonthly issue of the brand new, forthcoming literary spin-off publication of SIBYL Magazine entitled, SIBELLA: Poetry and Artwork To Heal the Soul and Inspire the Heart".

Letting Stillness Grow
I saw a sky as large as my heart
and I did not know
it was mine.

What wonders lie in stillness,
that evasive gift of life.
Is it fear of death, of nothingness
that keeps stillness at bay?
My thirst is great.
My skills are few,
but what skills might stillness
require?

Patience, for one.
Am I patient enough
and brave enough
to let my stillness grow?

Are You Too Busy To Be Happy?

Are You Too Busy To Be Happy?

Are You Too Busy to Be Happy? Quote GeotheThen your creativity is suffering, too!
When does happiness appear on your to-do list?
Have you ever noticed how as soon as you wake up, you begin making choices. And the lists begin. Have to do this and this and this today....

Where in your list does your happiness and creativity appear?

Are the things that make you happy and feed your creativity the first to go?

Are you, the essential You, passed over in your daily list of what's important?

Do you sacrifice your life to being busy?

Sacrificing your Self to your busy "to do" list isn't a healthy choice. It drains you of happiness. Happy people have happiness to share!

List three things you can do every day to nurture your creativity and release the flow of happiness within you. They don't have to be time consuming. Small gifts count.

"One must ask children and birds how strawberries and cherries taste." ~ Goethe

Running with Beauty: A Grand Aventure

Running with Beauty: A Grand Aventure

"I hide myself inside myself and then I try to find myself..."
When I was a little girl, I loved this rhyme that my mother taught us: "I hide myself inside myself and then I try to find myself..." There were more words, but these are the ones that have remained with me all my life. I loved the idea of hiding myself inside myself. I remember giggling and giggling as the giddy ballerina in me turned round and round in circles singing this to myself...

Running with Beauty: A Grand AventureLately, the rhyme has been coming back to me with an understanding that became quite visceral the other day. I was walking my dog on a beautiful trail and paused on a bridge overlooking the reservoir. The sky was a brilliant blue. The branches of the bare trees held the stark beauty of winter; it seemed to me that the branches were reaching skyward in prayer.

Exploring Our Inner Selves: The Talents and the Wisdom

Exploring Our Inner Selves: The Talents and the Wisdom

Exploring Inner Selves, Exploring the Shadow
Titian, An Allegory of Prudence
There is a very particular risk inherent in the creative process.
When you take the journey inward, you discover that you are not who you think you are, or you are more than who you think you are. But sometimes these images reflected through the inner mirrors are so alien to our ego that they cause us to run.

The trick is not to run, but to persevere. The image will shift, the fear will dissolve and the stranger seen through the creative mirror will become familiar and quite wonderful. These unknown parts of us will guide us through unseen doors, into unexpected landscapes.

A poem by Juan Ramon Jimenez speaks wonderfully to this point.

I Am Being Born Out of Myself, Shedding My Bark, a Poem by Meenu Mehrota

I Am Being Born Out of Myself, Shedding My Bark, a Poem by Meenu Mehrota

Hi Emily, Your thoughts never fail to inspire me and make me feel very proud of being a writer.
Here's something I wrote for your Creative Soul Works blog and mirrors what this journey that I started 4 years back.

I am being born out
of myself
shedding my bark
revealing the new
fresh, the untainted
part of me
soft murmur of the wind
faint chirpings of the birds
gentle crashing of the waves
the stillness of the round moon
the shrieking darkness of the sea at night
the brilliance of the pale blue morning sky
the lingering presence of the mountains all around me
the blushing of the sky at sunrise...
I appreciate it more now
feel them with my soul
my inner self is blooming
unfolding
tossing and turning
to wake up
and
walk on a new journey...

warm regards

When the Soul Speaks....

When the Soul Speaks....

When the Soul Speaks, Listen
I was aware, too, that the voice who was considering this Truth was not my own.
I had a fight with my husband last night. I slept in the guest room and come morning, I was still angry and hurt. So I decided to meditate on how to handle these feelings. This was the intention of the meditation, but soon I found myself considering the question of my truth. Not the truth in terms of my version of the fight. That I was right, of course, and he was wrong-- and would never admit it much less apologize. My meditation had taken me to my Truth with a capital T. I was aware, too, that the voice who was considering this Truth was not my own. That the thoughts in my head were not my own...

The Inner Critic and the Creative Unconscious

The Inner Critic and the Creative Unconscious

The Inner Critic is terrified of the creative unconscious because it is the home of feelings, emotions, images and it is chaotic and unexpected.

The Inner Critic likes order and loves the status quo, which is antithetical to the creative unconscious. That's why if you "fall down the rabbit hole" the Inner Critic won't follow you! Free of the Inner Critic, you have the possibility of experiencing real creative freedom and passionate stories awaits you.

Only then can the creative dance begin!

Awake My Soul: A Message from the Muse

Awake My Soul: A Message from the Muse

Awake My Soul: A Message from the Muse

“People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonance within our innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.”

Silence and Self

Silence and Self

Silence and the Inner Journey
Silence is the womb;
silence is the heartbeat.
Without silence we cannot hear the song.
Wear silence like a crown.
Drape yourself in its radiance.
Enter silence in the midst of laughter,
sorrow, joy and pain.
Self awaits.

Silence is our birthright.

It is the place that intuition, the voice of our inner guidance, calls home. It is the place where our true Self can be heard. The problem is, silence is a rarity. We can be alone deep in a pristine forest, far far away from the noise of modern society; we can be alone on a mountaintop with no sign of human life for miles and miles, yet the outer world silence can not penetrate the raucous swirling of own thoughts. Even if we are awe struck by the purity and silence of nature in the moment, so much so that our minds are suddenly infused with peace, it won’t be long before thoughts intrude.

The silence of pure solitude holds awareness and possibility, not loneliness or fear. The question is: how can we learn to inhabit solitude?

We Have Come For Love

We Have Come For Love

A Fierce Love, Wild and Free
The Mother Bear
by Emily Hanlon

Such confusion is life
emotions and doings and things.
Right, wrong, yes, no,
a whirlwind of living.
And where is love?
Like the roots of Sequoias
love penetrates,
tender, strong and caressing,
a web of support.

The soul’s song is sweet and ancient,
fierce with love,
a mother bear
wild and free.

This is what we have come for:
love, you and me, love!
